Seal Pups – Make sure your help is helpful!
Many well meaning visitors approach seals or sea lions resting on the beach, thinking the animals are in danger. Often seal pups may appear to be sick or distressed, even when they are in good health. Seal pups can sometimes have uneven breathing, nasal discharge, weeping eyes and make whiny, bleeping sounds. Additionally, they may appear emaciated but recover quickly after feeding. Pups are often left alone for many hours while the parent forages. Interference may cause adults to abandon their young, and can cause significant stress to the animals.
How can I help the seal pup?
Do not:
- Do not touch, move, disturb or harass the seal
- Do not try to feed the seal
- Do not pour water on the seal as they are often on shore to dry off
- Do not force the seal into the water
Do:
- Do stay 100m away from the seal, so as not to raise its stress levels
- Do keep pets and children away to avoid harmful interaction
- Do report! If you spot a seal pup alone, report the sighting to any Parks Canada staff member, by calling Parks Canada Dispatch at 1-877-852-3100
- Do leave the animal where it is. It is illegal for unauthorized people to touch, disturb, remove or possess wildlife from a national park reserve.
