Legacy actions

Abbot Pass Refuge Cabin National Historic Site

Parks Canada will take steps to remember Abbot Pass Refuge Cabin. These are the actions to which Parks Canada can commit:

History

  1. Collect relevant Parks Canada materials and make them accessible to the public, preferably through an archival institution. This may include photographs, digital scans, artifacts, recorded interviews or other relevant material.
  2. Explore options for the collection of other forms of intangible heritage, such as oral histories.
  3. Prepare a historical research plan informed by the results of public engagement and collaborate with third parties to conduct relevant historical research.

Interpretation

  1. Invite proposals from third parties for legacy interpretive projects through a formal application process. Parks Canada will make available to successful parties select salvaged materials, excluding the date stone, as well as digital scans and other Parks Canada-held materials under shared-use agreements.
  2. Strive to ensure legacy projects reflect the guidelines identified during public engagement: visual, interactive, immersive, educational, mobile and travelling, engaging the senses, informed by research, accessible to wide audiences, and aligned with the themes identified in public engagement.

Salvaged materials

  1. Reserve some salvaged materials, including masonry, until the results of a development application for a replacement hut are known.
  2. Reserve some salvaged materials, including masonry, for use in third-party legacy projects.
  3. Continue stewardship of the 1922 date stone in perpetuity. Conserve and share it with Canadians at an accessible location in ways that reflect the heritage values identified through public engagement.

National recognition

  1. Provide advice and guidance to any community third party that may pursue related commemorative designations with the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada or the Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office. (Note: Government bodies cannot propose new national historic designations. However, Parks Canada can advise and support members of the public who may wish to do so.)
  2. Invite the Canadian Mint and Canada Post to consider Abbot Pass Refuge Cabin as a topic for a future Canadian coin or stamp.
  3. Explore educational collaborations as opportunities arise.
