Avalanche Control Prohibitions and Restrictions

Issued: November 15, 2025

Pursuant to Section 7 of the National Parks General Regulations, these restrictions are in effect to protect the public from avalanche control actions including the extreme danger resulting from artillery fire, and resulting direct and sympathetic avalanches.

Winter Access Prohibitions and Restrictions

Entry and travel into the following areas of Glacier National Park is always prohibited:

Heather Hill Winter Prohibited Area Entry and Travel Prohibited
Cutbank Winter Prohibited Area Entry and Travel Prohibited
Abbott Ridge / Marion Lake Winter Prohibited Area Entry and Travel Prohibited
Cougar Mountain Winter Prohibited Area Entry and Travel Prohibited
Macdonald West Winter Prohibited Area Entry and Travel Prohibited
Mount Fidelity Year Round Prohibited Area Entry and Travel Prohibited

Entry and travel into ALL backcountry areas of Glacier National Park requires a valid Winter Permit from November 15 to the end of the avalanche control season. Winter permits are required for each individual unless travelling as a guest under the supervision of a certified guide in possession of a Winter Guided Group Permit. National Park Passes are also required.

Entry and travel into the following areas of Glacier National Park is prohibited except when posted open for the day:

Beaver Parking Winter Restricted Area Entry and Travel Allowed For Valid Winter Permit Holders Only

Winter Permits are only valid for entry into Winter Restricted Areas on days when they are posted as open. Winter Restricted Areas close at midnight and status is updated daily at 07:00.  (parkscanada.gc.ca/winterpermitareas).

Individuals must present their winter permit along with a valid government-issued photo identification to a Park Warden or Peace Officer upon request.

Winter parking prohibitions and restrictions

Glacier National Park visitors must use the designated restricted or unrestricted Winter Permit Parking Areas. Restricted parking areas close at midnight and status is updated daily at 7:00 AM. All visitors accessing the backcountry must display a Winter Parking Permit. 

Table legend

Green - Winter Unrestricted Areas and Unrestricted Parking Areas that remain open 24 hours a day during the avalanche control season.

Non-compliance with permit conditions is a violation under the Canada National Parks Act and Regulations that will be prosecuted and may result in fines up to $25,000 and/or permit suspension or cancellation.

There is no winter front country camping in Glacier National Park and sleeping in vehicles in parking areas is prohibited.

Vehicles may only be left overnight in Glacier National Park by those overnighting in the backcountry and only in the following designated winter parking areas: Rogers Pass Centre, Illecillewaet Valley, Beaver and Bostock. A backcountry permit and an additional overnight parking permit (free) are required.

These prohibitions and restrictions are effective November 15, 2025 until the seasonal end of the avalanche control program.
