Superintendant’s Order: Human Waste Disposal Directive – Nahanni National Park Reserve
Issued: June 24, 2025
These notices do not apply to Indigenous persons who are engaged in traditional renewable resource harvesting activities
Due to the number of users and resultant impacts to visitor experience and the environment, the Superintendent has designated the following activities in Nahanni National Park Reserve as prohibited, pursuant to section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, until further notice:
- Digging holes for the purpose of burying human waste at Pulpit Rock/the Gate and Lafferty Creek
- Overnight camping at Pulpit Rock/the Gate and Lafferty Creek for any groups or individuals that do not have the ability to pack out human waste
Therefore, visitors are required to pack out waste using a portable toilet kit (such as WAG Bags or Restop). By collecting and packing out human waste for overnight stays, visitors will help protect these popular overnight locations by reducing wildlife attractants and ensuring a positive experience for all campers.
